Ceramics Capstone: The Eschaton

Artist Statement

My work contemplates and explores the differences between the natural world and the so-called “man-made” world. I am intrigued by our categorical separation of forms that are considered organic, versus their geometric counterpart. Human history has been defined by physically transforming the natural world that we inherited to fit our functional and aesthetic needs. This has led to the highly rectilinear built environment that we find ourselves in today, and I am left feeling uncomfortable inside of a box.

Although this physical transformation slightly unsettles me, I find myself replicating this process within my work. I take clay, an extremely organic and natural material, and force it into strict geometric forms. My aesthetic desires geometrically ideal form, solid color, and crisp lines. These forms provide a sense of perfection, even if that perfection is illusory. Like all that have come before me, I am harnessing material in an attempt to control it, trying to create order from chaos.
