I was challenged to make a series of large scale, functional ceramic objects using multiple wheel-thrown components.

Problem:

RIT’s campus has limited dedicated smoking locations, and receptacles to dispose of cigarette butts are available only at these locations. However, many “unofficial” smoking areas are used by students frequently , creating high volumes of littered cigarette butts in these areas.

Solution:

Create a series of ceramic cigarette waste receptacles to place at undesignated, but frequently used, smoking locations. This more attractive receptacle will encourage proper disposal, and reduce cigarette litter on campus.

Cigarette litter dropped to almost 0 in the areas I placed my receptacles, however, the litter returned after about 6 months when the campus removed my ceramic pieces.
